University of Montana

About the Studio

The University of Montana Saxophone Studio is a group of Music Majors under the direction of Dr. Johan Eriksson. Within the studio, there are Performance, Jazz Studies, Composition, and Music Education majors. All of the individuals of the studio (former and present) have come from all over the country and even internationally.

Dr. Eriksson is well known for generating a studio that is well versed in all forms of music and for always seeking the best path of guidance for all his student's musical goals. Believing that every individual that comes through his studio has their own vision for themselves and their music.

As one of the most active studios at the University, the saxophone studio is directly involved in the Grizzly Marching Band, Concert Band Festival, The Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival, and student ensemble performances that take place frequently. Members of the studio are highly encouraged to participate in Jazz Band and Combos, Saxophone Quartet, and to seek out musical opportunities that push their doubling abilities such as, Symphony Orchestra, Clarinet Choir, Flute Choir and or an ensemble where they are not performing on the saxophone.
Members of the studio are required to play in either Concert Band or Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and for Music Education Majors, the Grizzly Marching Band is required.
